What Is Somatic Yoga?

Somatic yoga is a relatively recent development in the broader yoga landscape, bringing together the postural traditions of yoga with the insights of somatic education and trauma-informed bodywork. The word somatic comes from the Greek soma, meaning the living body, and somatic practices are concerned with developing a direct, first-person relationship with the body as experienced from within, rather than observed from outside.

How Somatic Yoga Differs from Conventional Yoga

In most yoga classes, the teacher leads students into specific shapes, and the student's task is to match their body to the prescribed form. Somatic yoga inverts this relationship: rather than shaping the body to match an external template, the student is invited to explore movement from the inside, following sensation, noticing subtle patterns of tension and release, and gradually expanding the range of comfortable motion through gentle, curious inquiry rather than directed effort.

The pace of somatic yoga is typically very slow, allowing the nervous system time to register and integrate each movement. This slow pace is not about physical limitation but about neurological learning: the nervous system changes through awareness and repetition, and the quality of attention brought to each movement determines how deeply the practice reshapes habitual patterns.

Who Somatic Yoga Is For

Somatic yoga is particularly well suited to people recovering from injury, those with chronic pain, individuals with a history of trauma in the body, and anyone who has felt disconnected from physical sensation or who moves through yoga class primarily in their head rather than in their body.

It is also valuable for experienced practitioners who want to go deeper into the subtlety of movement rather than the complexity of postures. Somatic yoga tends to produce a quality of embodiment, a sense of actually inhabiting the body fully, that is worth experiencing regardless of your background or experience level.
